Mark Freundel passed away March 16, 2009. He was born in May 1951 and had a long career in software engineering. He was most recently working in quality assurance production review at L3 Communications.
A memorial service will be held Sunday June 14th 2-4 pm at Adventures in Bridge.
Joel Hepner, a former president of Unit 531 (North San Diego) writes:
As one of Mark’s permanent partners (Tuesday nights) since mid 2001 and prior to that, occasionally for many earlier years, I’m adding to your request for stories about him.
First and most importantly from a personal level Mark was probably the most generous and kindest in time and support for anyone who was in need. He would go out of his way to be of help to anyone, anytime. His ethics at the bridge table was nonpareil! He always took the time to help newer players learn and understand the rules of duplicate. I’ll miss him for all those reasons. Mark was what they call a real “Mensch!”
One hand I must relate. We were in a 7 No Trump (not 6 NT nor 7 Clubs) contract and I left him with a wild dummy consisting of AJ109xxx in clubs and NO other entry to the board. You know Mark - always matchpointing! Mark had the K stiff in clubs! You guessed it, he OVERTOOK the K and the Q of clubs was STIFF! He had exactly six cold tricks in his hand besides the club K and no way to get to the board to take even a losing finesse. We made 7 for a top! Does that sound like Mark?
